First-class passengers might have a seat that turns into a bed or even their own private apartment. Business-class might offer more legroom but doesn't offer a private space. The food and drink in business class are typically at a restaurant level.

CHECK-IN DESK

The following check-in desks are active at Terminal 1 for check-in and baggage delivery: desks from 1 to 7 SkyPriority; desks from 8 to 10A families with children, unaccompanied minors and passengers with reduced mobility; check-in for all flights operated by ITA Airways is carried out from desk 11 to 43.

The best seat for maximum legroom: Any exit-row seat. The best seat for sleeping or limited noise: A window seat away from the bathroom and cabin crew areas. The best seat for minimal turbulence: A seat over the wing.

First class creates a sense of exclusivity and high prices are necessary to maintain luxurious standards. "When someone does sit in first class, they feel like they're getting outsized value, whether in the form of an upgrade, award, or discounted first-class ticket," writes Schlappig.

The best seats in Business Class

In Business Class, I'll always book a window seat (with the seat next to the window) at least one row away from the galley and lavatories. Bulkhead seats offer more room but I would only choose these if they're not near the galley/lavatories, or if they have doors.

The crew can bump someone who's late. It's also good to be aware of which airlines you're more likely to get bumped from. Airlines such as American Eagle, Delta, and United are far more likely to bump you if your plane is overbooked.

Business Class seats are always much more comfortable than those in Economy and many airlines offer seats that transform into fully-flat beds, so you can actually lie down and sleep during the flight.

Do airports check hand luggage weight? ›

Are cabin bags weighed? They can be, but more often they are size-checked. We recommend that you ensure your bag is within the weight and size limits the airline specifies if you want it on board with you. If the staff deem your bag too big or too heavy, it will be checked.

You'll have less weight to lug around with you. You won't have to worry about the airline losing your bags. You can get out of the airport quicker since you won't be waiting at the baggage carousel. If you've never travelled with only hand luggage you'll know how much easier it is but you'll also know it can be tricky.

Hand luggage or cabin baggage, are all the personal belongings a passenger can carry along the cabin. You may take your handbag, laptop bag, etc. into the cabin as long as they are controlled at the security checkpoints. If you wish, you could place them into the overhead lockers.

If the baggage exceeds the limit allowed, it might not be accepted as checked baggage. The maximum weight allowed per bag is 23 kg (except for Business Class passengers, whose maximum weight allowance is 32 kg). If you need to, you can increase it from 23 kg to 32 kg by paying a surcharge.

As a general guide, carry-on baggage should have maximum length of 22 in (56 cm), width of 18 in (45 cm) and depth of 10 in (25 cm). These dimensions include wheels, handles, side pockets, etc. Some airlines also enforce weight limitations, typically starting at 5kg/11lbs.

International flights allow one, and often two, pieces of checked luggage per passenger. International luggage allowance is often influenced by whether the flight is intracontinental (within the same continent) or intercontinental (across the ocean or spanning different continents).

Is Lufthansa buying ITA Airways? ›

German flag carrier Lufthansa has revealed that it has agreed with the Italian Government to purchase a 41% stake in ITA Airways. The 41% stake in ITA will be acquired through a capital increase of €325 million ($348mn).

A new airline, the state-backed ITA (Italia Transporto Aero), took over Alitalia operations on October 15, 2021 and through some complicated governmental wheeling and dealing, permitted the new entity to be free from the previous airline's debt.

Why is Alitalia closing? Italy has struggled to find investors to save the bankrupt airline after it was put into state administration in 2017. The airline had not turned a profit since 2002. The situation has been made worse by the pandemic which saw flights grounded around the world for months.

On 15 October 2021, ITA Airways took acquisition of 49 aircraft from Alitalia in the wake of that airline's shutdown on 14 October 2021, including 18 Airbus A319-100s, 25 A320-200s, and 6 A330-200s. These aircraft joining the fleet were in addition to the 2 A320-200 and the 1 A330-200 already under the ITA Airways AOC.

ITA Airways is a company totally owned by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance for the exercise of business in the air transport sector. The airline has been active since November 2020.

ITA's fleet

ITA has made it clear that Airbus is its preferred manufacturer, with 89% of its current fleet made up of a mixture of Airbus' narrowbodies and widebodies. The Italian carrier also has a further 72 aircraft on order, all from Airbus. The Airbus A320-200 is the most used aircraft in ITA's fleet.

Alitalia filed for bankruptcy again in 2017. The brand officially ceased operations in late 2021, when it was reborn as ITA. It operated only 52 aircraft, down from about 160 Alitalia had in the mid-1990s. According to its own business plan, ITA didn't expect to earn a profit before 2024.

Then it won again for three years in a row: 2019, 2020 and 2021. A number of U.S. carriers also made the top 20 list. Alaska Airlines came in first among the U.S. carriers, followed by Hawaiian Airlines, United, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
